Elegant terns abandon about 3000 eggs after illegal drone crashes on beach

The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Orange County, California is a popular nesting and breeding place for the elegant terns.

Although drones can be used for numerous good purposes, including development and environmental protection, the incorrect use of drones can cause serious harm. According to the state department of fish and wildlife, two drones were flown illegally over the area, one of them crashed on the beach. Fearing an attack from a predator, several thousand terns abandoned their ground nests.

It’s one of the largest-scale abandonments of eggs ever at the coastal site of North San Diego.
