The Great Green Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is one of the most famous sights in the world. However, beside the Great Wall of China, the country also builds the Great Green Wall. Officially known as the Three-North Shelter Forest Program, China started planting millions of trees in 1978 to hold back the growing Gobi Desert.

The forest strips are expected to measure 4500 km in length by 2050. From having a forest cover of only 10% in 1949, forests now cover 23% of the total area of land in China.

The Great Green Wall of Africa

The Great Green Wall of Africa initiative was launched in 2007 by the African Union. The African continent faces desertification that leads to hunger and poverty.

The aim of the African Green Wall to stop desertification in the Sahel region and to restore 100 million ha of currently degraded land; sequester 250 million tons of carbon and create 10 million green jobs. When completed, the Great Green Wall of Africa will be 8000 km long.
